I recently acquired a 1998 Evinrude 50hp motor that I am putting on my boat (replacing an older Merc). I broke the alarm horn during the installation process, and just bought a new one - which is not making any noise when I first turn the key. If I recall correctly, when I pulled the new motor off of it's original boat, these alarms chimed for a brief second when I turned the key in the other boat.

One of the things I did not get with the new motor was the tachometer (which had the alarm lights). From what I am reading in the repair manual, it almost sounds like the horn won't work without this gauge being plugged in? Can anyone confirm this? I was looking to avoid spending $100 on a gauge and just use the alarm horn to alert me to problems, but if I need the gauge for the horn to work then that plan is out the window.

You need to have one of the following to make the horn work
176794 — HORN DRIVER MODULE (1 required per assembly)
176318 — GAUGE, SYSCHK2
or the tach with the systemcheck lights. The gauge is more money but the warning lights will alert you to what is wrong even if the horn quits.
