1998 Evinrude 60hp - can system check (no oil) cut off motor?

I replaced the VRO with a conventional fuel pump. The motor fires up and then dies a couple of seconds after I hear a buzzer.
This has the system check warning gauge so I don't know if that's all it is, a warning, or is it able to kill the motor?
Since I no longer have a VRO (yes, I disconnected the harness - 4 wire) or an oil tank (also disconnected the harness - 2 wire)
I expected to possibly hear an alarm but didn't know if that would also kill the motor. The motor shuts off as if the spark is
grounded vs "bogging" on a lack of fuel.

Check the quickstart system. If the motor is cold it should advance the timing causing the motor to run faster until she is warmed up. You are running 50::1 gas::eek:il mix, right?

That's a great idea...was just thinking about it this morning. I am raising the "fast idle" bar on the control box up before starting and now I'm reading that this is only to be done with a flooded engine condition and will override the Quickstart system.

Another thing, I don't get the "alarm" test when I turn the key to start (but I am getting an alarm after it runs for about 5 seconds just before the motor shuts off). I am told by the previous reply that these warning systems are just that, warnings, and will not disable the motor so not sure if I need to worry about the system check not happening (yes, could burn me down the road, I realize).

Yes, it's a 50:1 mix.

Yes, the beep will often occur after the motor starts. You will see each LED on the System Check Tach blink during the test, after you release the key from the start position.

The Quickstart system receives an "engine cold" signal from the two-wire temp sensor on one of the heads. That caused the QuickStart to run the motor at about 1100 RPMs until she is warmed up. Quickstart also activates for a few seconds each time you start her. Maybe your engine stalls immediately after QuickStart stops advancing the timing, a few sec after the engine starts?

I would use the warm up lever, and see if the issue is fixed. If so, test the two-wire temp sensor and see if it works to spec.

Hi, strange, but sometimes I get the "beep" after just turning the key to "on" and sometimes not. I was able to get the motor running, but only after putting it in gear and getting the rpms up enough (thankfully, I have a jet lower unit so I can do that). I can get the engine to warm up (at least 5 mins of run time) and it still won't idle in neutral. I guess it could be a throttle cable adjustment, etc. so I need to look at it some more.

I am definitely not seeing the so-called Quickstart system kicking in at all. The manual also says that warm up lever disables the quick start system (not sure how to know if that's true?). In any case, the lever doesn't give me enough throttle to keep the motor running, again, I can shift forward and rev up to keep it going.

Quickstart disables itself when the RPM is above 1200 or so. 5min of warm up time is a lot, unless the day and water are real cold. Maybe a check of your thermostat, is in order.
