Going down the lake at about 45mph the motor died. Trying to restart it sounded like it wanted to so I thought a vapor lock or something w/fuel. Got it running and with full throttle it would stall. Tried a few times and got it going for about a 1/2 mile. Died again. Turn the key and a click from the starter. Tried to jump it from another boat and nothing.

Towed it back to ramp and then at home tried a different battery and nothing but the click. Clicking sounds to me like a starter issue/battery but rulled the battery out. Even if it is the starter why would it die going down the lake? I don't think that could be the issue. Any help would be great. Thanks for taking the time.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Ignition off, engine in gear, can you rotate the engine by turning the prop by hand? Have someone shift it as you rotate prop to get into gear.

If the engine is free , follow Tash's advise to clean all grounds.

Thanks. I will try to rotate the motor. I just don't get it if the starter is bad why would it shut off going down the lake. I can understand if it just would not start at the ramp or after fishing a bit. But going down the lake it died.

if you have corroded connection in several places it could have blown something. you have the place to start. you cannot check anything until the motor turn over.
