1998 Evinrude 115: Fuel Pump Issue?

Hi all - I recently bought a used boat with a 98 Evinrude 115 hp. I knew it had issues before I bought it. The previous owner said the rectifier/regulator was bad b/c the battery was overcharging and when the engine warmed up a check engine light would come on and the engine would stumble. He included a new one in the purchase and I installed it. It ran fine on muffs for 20 minutes in the driveway. Took it to the lake today and it idled fine for 15 minutes while we were waiting on a buddy to get there. We pulled away and slowly increased the throttle. Got up to 30 mph and then the alarm sounded 20 seconds later, check engine light came on, and the engine stumbled back down to idle. It did this multiple times, would sound like it was running out of gas, and eventually it wouldn't even start. Plenty of oil in the tank and bulb is hard. Plenty of gas and the bulb feels pretty hard. We took off the cover and listened for the fuel pump once we turned the ignition - nothing. We disconnected the gas line after the fuel pump while pumping the bulb. No gas made it past the fuel pump. We waited 30 minutes or so while lounging around and the fuel pump finally kicked on enough for us to make it back close to the dock and then wouldn't start again. When I brought it home the fuel pump would not cut on.

My question is do I need to replace the fuel pump or are there smaller items within it? Also, do you think the fuel pump could be causing the engine alarm to sound? I'm thinking that since the pump controls the oil and gas, the alarm may be sounding b/c the engine would be getting oil if the pump is cutting in and out. Any help would be appreciated. I also have the repair manual but wanted to see if someone has encountered this before. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like time to replace the VRO/OMS pump....

If I wanted to just premix and eliminate VRO, could I buy a cheap fuel pump for non-VRO models like the one on eBay below and block off the oil lines? I've had 2 strokes before and don't mind to mix even know it may burn more oil in the long run. Seems like the VRO pumps are more in the neighborhood of $300.

A model number would be nice so we know which engine we are talking about?
If a VRO and not pumping, rebuild the air motor section.
If a 60 looper, you get trouble with the connection to vapor chamber with another pump.

The model # is E115FPLEEC made 12/1998. It's the fuel injected Ficht. I read where another person with a 1998 115 evinrude motor (didn't give model #) also replaced with a non-VRO pump and just went to premix. Think there will be any issues?

Sorry, but being a Ficht you have no other option than fix what you have!! Ficht's have no VRO.
They have one fuel lift pump(crank pulse operated) and one electric high pressure pump.
Oil is injected separately by a solenoid into the venturi intakes and just a very small amount mixed into fuel to lubricate the injectors only!!
According to mod number, a 99. The electric fuel pump is inside #1.

So I can't cap off the oil lines and run premix? Seems like a lot of people do that and replace the pump with a cheap one.

If gas isn't make it past the pump, which one would probably be the culprit? - The Fuel Lift Pump or High Pressure Pump?

Thanks for the info.

This engine may be a two stroke, but is NOT lubricated by mixing fuel and oil and letting it pass through the crank case!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All fuel goes through the injectors on top of the pistons, no fuel passes the crank case.
Strongly suggest you Google about about Ficht and the principles before trying anything disastrous.

Re: 1998 Evinrude 115: Fuel Pump Issue?

I'm at a loss now. I took off all the hoses to the fuel pumps and the electrical connections. Cleaned them off and reconnected. Now the fuel pumps work and fuel is reaching the injectors. I just ran it on the muffs for 10 minutes, throttled up and down and it gave me no issues. The fuel bulb does feel like I can pump it a little firmer after a few minutes of running though. Any thoughts?

I can just see me taking it to the lake and it dying again.

The bulb will not stay hard from overpressure after some time, but slightly soft. You may have 'cleaned' some electrical connection by taking apart and reassemble. Give it a try.
