1998 9.8 Nissa - No fuel

A couple of months ago I took the carb apart because no fuel was getting to the bowl, I opened the bowl drain and only a few drops came out. The inside was very clean, no build up and the float looked really good with no sticking. I did not see any trash that may have caused a plugged up hole but I did run a wire through everything. I saw nothing wrong with it but I am not a very good carb guy.

It ran fine when I put it back together although I only used it maybe twice for a very short period of time. Today it is doing the same thing, no fuel in the bowl. It cranked on the first pull, ran 50 yards then died. It has the original fuel line and tank and it sits in water. The filter is clear.

Any ideas? I did unscrew the jet and screwed it back in but didn't blow it out or run a wire through it.

Have your carburetor cleaned at your local dealer and your problem will go away.

No local dealer but thanks for the reply.

Is there anyone with more knowledge who may steer me in the right direction. I can get the carb apart but why did it clog up again? The float and valve looked pristine.

Ya, Take it to the dealer is a big help, I have been working on carbs since i was 5 years old, so first take it off and take it apart. Than soak it in carb cleaner and blow out the passages with compressed air, clean or replace the fuel filter. That should do it, but remember gas siting in a carb will form gum in less than 3 months and gas in a boat tank or any vented can is no good after 1 month.

Hope this helps

TOHATSU GURU, is the authority on these motors here. you admitted,"but I am not a very good carb guy." i would take his advice. or become more carb informed, do you have a factory service manual for your motor.

a carb can be clean, now, run it 15 minutes, and if the fuel line are cruddy, it can be dirty again.

No offense intended, just a little dig. 99% of all questions could be answered "take it to a shop". I am too cheap and stupid to do that.

I will use carb cleaner this time and dump the gas in the riding mower and start over. Must be some gunk up in the float valve hole thingy making the doo-hickey stick.

Use the process of elimination.

You say you get no fuel to the carburetor.........so pull the fuel line off the carburetor and squeeze the primer bulb to see if you have fuel flow there. If so, then the problem is in the carb. If not, see what is stopped up. If your fuel line from the tank to the motor is dry-rotted, etc., replace it. What I do find interesting is that you get it cranked and it dies a little ways away. If you pump the prime bulb back up does it start and run fine again for another 50 yards? If so, this points to an air leak in the fuel line from tank to motor or a fuel pump problem (assuming fuel line inside motor housing is fine).

Also, it might be a good investment to add an additional fuel filter like the units they sell at academy or wal-mart. You would mount the base to your transom and it has a large spin-on fuel filter that is cheap to replace once a year or so.

Also, do the obvious and start with fresh gas, and if your old fuel line/prime bulb is in good shape, flush it with the fresh gas before connecting to the motor.

Check these points out and get back with us.

Re: 1998 9.8 Nissa - No fuel

Waylan,

Thanks for the tips. Yes, gas comes out when I disconnect the hose from the carb. I can even pump a little into the air intake and it fires up for a second. When I unscrew the fuel bowl drain only a couple of drops come out. So, it must be a sticking float even though a couple of taps with a hammer didn't help and the float looked great when I had it apart. New fuel and actually using carb cleaner this time should get it.

Edit to add: No, it will not start back up after priming it again. No fuel gets to the bowl.

Have you checked your fuel pump, maybe not working/pumping properly ? If you have a spare, change it and test, if that's the prob, you can fix the troubled pump buying spare parts for it. Some pumps are being delivered with screws not well tight, re tight to see if Ok. Do not apply excesive force.

Sea Rider,

Thanks for the input! The web is a wonderful thing. The pump appears to be fine. If plan A doesn't work I will go to the pump next. Good luck during hurricane season.

Edit: I think hurricanes go by Peru! I could be wrong......

Fortunately not, not around this geographical area. Not even hard rain, tornados, etc, etc. Check gas pump, let us know what was the trouble if found.

I did not clean out the float valve hole the first time. Cleaned carb again and it was fine.
