MY 1998 150 EVINRUDE INTRUDER HAS A MISS BUT NOT ALL THE TIME, I MIGHT RUN ALL DAY AND NO MISS, AND THEN THE NEXT TIME I PUT IN THE WATER IT MIGHT MISS ON THE INITIAL START THEN WHEN YOU START TO GET ON PLANE OR REV IT UP THE MISSING STOPS, I HAVE PUT 2 POWER PACKS ON THIS MOTOR IN THE PAST AND HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP BUT IT NEVER ACTS UP AT THE SHOP. MY MECHANIC THINKS IT IS THE STATER BUT SAYS HE CANT PROVE IT. THAT IS ALOT OF MONEY TO SPEND ON TRIAL AND ERROR. PLEASE ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE APPRECIATED (SOMETIMES IT WILL MISS WHEN RUNNING AND TACH DOES NOT ACT UP.)

Howdy Bimmer.<br /><br />Check the positioning of your plug wires. You may have one intermittently shorting to the block or the cowl framing.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

I have the same issue with my 1998 150 Intruder. When started it will intermitently run very rough and backfire itself out. I took it to the shop and they found nothing wrong with it. The plug wires are fine and I fairly certain it has to be something else. Does your backfire?

Two questions for either (or both) of you:<br /><br />1. What brand and number spark plugs are in your motor?<br /><br />2. Was the sensor eye changed with at least one of the packs?<br /><br />-John

Re: 1998 150 EVINRUDE INTRUDER

I have a 1993 150 intruder and is in the shop right now for some of the same reasons. sometimes it misses at high rpm's and other times it will not jump out of the hole without dieing . Here's what the mechanic (not "parts changer")said. The water pump has got sand in it and to much ware on the impeller witch is causing it to run at 160*+ and should be @140*too hot.So now with the new pump in the water pressure is fine so is the temp. All that's left is to get a new power pack because the old one got to hot and did damage to the relays. when these get to hot the sensors shut down the motor to prevent damage and the power pack will have the described symptoms.Bill

The plugs in the boat are Champion QL78C and are about a year old - they were changed by the dealer that I took this to. <br /><br />The sensor eye has never been changed. <br /><br />Is there a test that can be performed to test the impeller performance? <br /><br />Thanks for the help!

Re: 1998 150 EVINRUDE INTRUDER

they test the pressure of the water pump . in the service manual they have the specs. I just ordered a service manual yesterday just for the maintaince part of it,I'm not real mechanical and I know it. I'm comfortable doing basic maintaince but after that I'm money ahead to pay a mechanic(not a parts changer). My old man use to say "a good lesson either cost allot or hurts allot sometimes both" good luck and we will compare notes later.Bill

The correct spark plugs are the Champion QL78YC and should be gapped to .030"<br /><br />You might consider the sensor eye, it can cause similar problems.<br /><br />-John

Thanks John - I'll take your advice and change the plugs and take a look into changing out a sensor eye. Know any way to test the sensor eyes, or should they just be swapped out?<br /><br />Thanks

There's a special tool [of course  ] that plugs into the sensor and you hook a couple of clips to the solenoid and a ground to power the tester. Crank the engine over and a set of lights tells you good/bad. The thing is, in a situation where you're dealing with an irratic ignition, it may not catch a fault. One thing you could try before spending some cash on a sensor, is to remove the encoder wheel, and clean the "eyes" with a q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Make sure no cotton fuzz gets left behind. Sometimes the lenses just collect dirt/dust/whatever and the debris prevents it from reading correctly.<br /><br />-John
