Ive been working on boat motors for over 10 years and my father has for over 20 years, we have a 1998 johnson 130 hp that will crank up and idle but wont rev up or it bogs down will pick rpms up when choked. I have gone through the carbs they are clean changed the needle and seats same problem I changed the cdi box spark plugs checked for vaccum leaks made sure the crank case wasnt leaking or leaking from under the powerhead . Ive adjusted the timing up and back still same problem any suggestions?

Have you checked the check valves and the recirculation system? If a check valve is bad it could lead to engine loading up.

check valves are good the motor isnt loading up i can pull the cold start idle arm up on the shift box it will rev up for a good 6 or 7 secs then die right out Im thinking about buying the carb repair kits from sierra replacing all the gaskets ... Im just at a lost ive fixed hundreds oh evinrudes and johnsons and i cant wrap my finger around this one.. Its always the plastic carbs that give me the most trouble.

Yea man I had an issue with the plastic carbs being warped.

I had to "mill" the carb bowls down AND the face of the carb that mounts to the throttle body on 400 grit sandpaper, and my motor ran like a new motor.

The other thing that is often missed are the idle calibration pockets that are located IN the throttle body. Some motors have a screw on plate, others have a welch plug. You HAVE to take the welch out, clean it out with welders tip cleaners, and put in new plugs. I chased my tail for MONTHS over this and this was what fixed my seemingly endless issues.

Lastly, pay the extra and get the Johnson/Evinrude carb kits vs. the sierra ones. I was disappointed with the sierra carb kits for this motor.

Yea it does sound like it is sucking air, but you said earlier that you didnt have any vacuum leaks. The crankcase seals dont typically leak on these motors because the mating surfaces are rather large. Possibly an intake manifold leak? Take the carb cleaner out and see if you can locate a leak. I have also heard of using a propane torch with the gas on and NO FLAME!!!! If there is a leak the propane will get in an the revs will pick up.

Coolan glad to hear it. Did you check the bowl and face for warpage while you had them apart?
