I refuse to replace good parts. The problem i have with my starter is that the amature doesnt move up to engage the flywheel. I hear the motor spinning but the amature doesnt spin unless you hit it.

I had taken it apart and tried cleaning the contacts up. It would turn like a champ but then i let it sit for like 3 weeks and it wouldnt come up to engage starter until i hit it.

Does anyone know what could cause the amature to not move up to engage the Flywheel???

heres a parts diagram below for reference

The bendix is the part that engages the flywheel. If it won't move it probably needs grease on the shaft.
Grease not a spray grease. On the shaft only.
The bendix has rubber hub in it and any oil/grease will cause it to slip.
Lightly greas the shaft and turn it by hand and it should help.J
