Number #3 on the link below:

Volvo Penta Exploded view / schematic Flywheel Housing and Rear Mounts 3.0GSMHUB, 3.0GSPHUB - MarinePartsEurope.com

Some websites mark it as obsolete, does that mean I shouldn't even bother with it ? Cant imagine it helps much anyway.

Edit 12/7/13 Here is a pic of it:

Always include the whole serial/model#
They made a BUNCH of 3.0
Try Cobe Marine in Pasadena,Md.
They didn't use it in some applications.
They can actually hold water in the housing(if it get's that deep)and rust the coupler springs.(If you have springs).

where is the best place to find the serial # ?
How to identify your engine or drive

If I recall this correctly it's there to prevent water & debris from getting into the flywheel area which in turn keeps the water and debris from slinging around which could potentially cause damage or runnability issues elsewhere. Also on some engine models it could help keep item number 2 (inspection cover) from vibration which has been known to make a rattling type sound down/back there in the past. And yes, if the water level gets to high it would hold water as well.

Re: 1997 Volvo Penta 3.0 Flywheel gasket

there is no way for me to find out my engine model based on that, its a new engine made by Titan Engines, no volvo tags anywhere on it. All repainted.

I might of found the gasket, ordered it through a local shop here in town, but if is not the correct one, i might just go ahead and sillicone it instead (even though im against it).

Simple question, Does a gasket go there or not?

Well to be honest, It's really your call if you would like it there or not. Is it absolutely needed? I don't believe so.

Good luck.:)
