Looking at a boat with a 1997 Volvo 4.3L GS. Owner states this is very low hours and well maintained. From the photos it looks like new, but when I get to look at it in the flesh anything particular I should be looking for?

Any problems with this engine/outdrive?
What is the difference between the 4.3 GS and GL?

Thanks in advance

Volvo Penta GS=General Motors Superior = 4 barrel. Volvo Penta GL= General Motors Low = 2 barrel. Volvo Penta FSI= Ford Superior Injected.

The first GS 4.3 were 205 hp . The new ones are 210 hp. This is a very good engine. Look at the service records for the prior owner. Service is key to the condition of this engine.

A compression test is always good and a test drive is a must. It should start easily, and should run smoothly at all rpms. No smoke should be visible. When backing off the throttle you should not get any smoke, and no backfires.

Sorry to piggy back on this post, but I have a Volvo Penta 4.3GL, does this mean that I could fit the GS Carb and get 210hp? Or is it more complicated than that?

Regards

Chris
