1997 OMC 140 starter removal and rubber seal question

Hello, the trial launch of my new 1997 Starcraft 22 ft Islander did not go well - the starter on the OMC 140 I/O failed after I stalled mid-river, plus the rubber seal around the outdrive had a major leak I had overlooked. My 90 year old mom, wife and teenage son were all pretty calm, and we puttered back to the boat ramp with the 3 horse kicker.

So, two questions: the manual says, of course, "remove starter", (I tested the starter, putting the 12v right to the solenoid, and then directly to the motor terminal) - 3 bolts right? one bolt obvious on side of starter, one visible and one upside down at under-front of starter? So far, I can't get to the two lower bolts and am planning to pull the motor up to get at them. Any comments/experience from OMC people?

Second question: I am getting a new seal to put on, but seeing the size of the hole that the rubber covers is really disconcerting. I routinely go (well, I used to) out 10 miles to offshore islands here on Maine coast and it feels weird to rely so much on a big floppy piece of rubber. Maybe this isn't the right boat for me - but one idea I had was to spray "good stuff" type foam around the inside of the gasket seal after I put the new one on. Real kludge solution, but that would give me a bit of comfort if the seal tore out on the water. Any comments, other than pure revulsion?
thanks, Richard

oops, I mean 1977, as in big 16 hole transom/outdrive seal.
