1997 ocean runner 175 runs only with ignition key held in start position

Motor runs fine after warmup, but initinally it's necessary to hold key in start position. Once the motor runs for a minute or so, the problem no longer exist. Ignition switch checks good and with B/Y kill wire disconnected the problem continues. I can cut the B/Y wire at the power pack but reluctant to do this, unlesss as a last resort. ANY SUGGESTIONS????

That motor probably has battery voltage feeding the powerpack, only while the starter is cranking. Maybe the stator has some dirty connections lowering the stator voltage to the powerpack until the battery charges back up? It is a guess, but a place to start checking. CDIElectronics likely has some checks for the stator.

Is the starter mtr still energized when you have the key in the start position to keep it running ??

Boobie...........no sure if starter is engaged.....but believe it is. I'll try to determine this...thanks

Yes, the starter motor continues to run.

You better fix the prob you have or else you'll be buying a starter motor too.
