No, Lipper, it isn't true.

Even if it was, it would be cheaper to trade for a used 175 or 200 of about the same age.

If that isn't a good answer, you aren't going to get one.

Good luck. :)

Lets start by looking at what you have. Are you getting the most out of it now? If you are propped out in the mid to low 5000 range then you arent. If your boat will not respond to small torque increases then you may spend a lot of money for nothing.

Tell us more about your rig and set up.

OK kids, lets play nice and keep the subject on the same thread;

yankee lipper
First Mate
Member # 31262

posted August 20, 2003 09:27 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a ranger 461 vs. i have a 24 pitch michigan wheel ballistic prop. i turn 5200rpm.i estimate my top end at about 60 to 62 mph.i do not have a jack plate but my boat has a built in set back. i did a comp. test on my clylinders. highest was 90 lowest was 70. most were 80 to 85. was thinking of shaving heads ? Can you put a 200 powerhead on my lower unit? what else can i do?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK. First we need to verify your speed. Do it by whatever method we will be using throughout the entire process --GPS, measured run etc. If you are truly running 60-62 now you are at 3 to 6% slip and I find that hard to believe with a Ballistic.

Your compression raises some question on the cylinder thats at 70. Lets do a good decarb and recheck. We need to know the internals are all good before we establish our baseline. Do not shave the heads!!!

At 5200 rpm there is no need to look for more power, we arent taking advantage of what we have now. The rev limiter is at either 6200 or 6700 depending on your ignition. Lets go with the 6200 scenario for now. Lugging the motor at 5200 may have a lot to do with your 70 lbs compression.

I would also be looking at the probability of a different make/style prop. Think about what direction you would like go -- 3 blade, 4 blade etc. Any preferences? What are your thoughts as far as performance? Overall performance with a tournament load or light load and just top end speed? Or something in between?

Post the numbers on the cylinder heads. Both should be the same.

Think of this as a trip. We need a map. We determine our destination and we map out the best route to get there. We know where were going but now we need to know where we are in order to get there.

Let us know!

I have a 1990 XP150 evinrude and I tried a ballistic prop. Opinion= crap. If you compare the weight of a more quality SS prop like a Raker designed for that OB it is much heavier/thicker in the blades therefor less flex. I put boyesen reeds in my OB and I achieve better acceleration and a better idle. That stuff you decarb your eng with works, I tried it and it brought the comp up about 5 per cyl. My cyl range from 95 to 98 lbs for comp. My engine is still a dog. Runs great but it is still a doggy motor. The newer eng are mutch snappier out of the hole. 1990 tracker 1800 24p raker awesome bow lift 55mph. Thats is with a genisis on the bow, it weighs 75lbs but rocks. good luck.
