1997 Force 120 Prop Spins While Running Motor on muff in NEUTRAL

Is it normal if prop spins very slowly while running on muff in NEUTRAL? What would be the problem? Thanks. - anple

Here is a representative photo of the internals. It is actually from the older Chrysler 2 piece lower but will give you the idea.

Normal! Since both gears are constantly in mesh with the pinion and turning while the engine is running AND since the forward gear is bushed on the prop shaft while the reverse gear is carried in a needle bearing and does not touch the shaft, the forward gear has slightly more drag on the prop shaft than the reverse. Thus: In neutral, the prop will spin slowly while the engine is running on muffs with no load against the prop.

Uh oh you might have HUGE problems. Before you do anything make sure you remove the pivot pin screw for the shift rod and reinstall if it has one.

you will have HUGE problems if you pull the pivot pin and the mechanism falls ..just put advice from Jason32038 in the correct mental file in future ...Frank is always right

yup . gotta agree with fucawi. i have never seen a bad answer from frank. no offense jason but frank is the man. and to add to it my 1988 force 85 hp does the same thing on the muffs. its just the nature of the beast.

Normal to have a little spin at the prop. I have a 89 125 force outboard & a 94 force outboard and both will spin a bit out of water. No worries.

If it's spinning very slowly it's normal
