Took the boat out of winter storage drove it to the boat dock approx 5 miles and it ran fine. Went to the boat about two weeks later and it will not start. Called a local mech out to look at it and he tells me the power pack is out. OK $600 to fix that. He calls and says now the stator is out (another $500). Stopped by the boat to get life vests and thought I would try to start the motor, it starts! I let it run for a few minutes and it sounds fine. I turn it off and restart it and it restarts just fine. Third time was a dud it didnt start but it did do a little backfire. Came back to the boat about 5 hours later to drop off life vests and it starts again so, I thought I would take it out and maybe running it might do it some good. As soon as I gave it gas to go forward it died. Havent tried anything since. I already bought a stator, just waiting for it to come ups. Have had two boat mechanics look at my 1997 70 hp evinrude. Im getting worried Im dumping money for them to guess whats wrong. The one checked compressions, bypass and then for spark thats when he told me the power pack was bad (just bought one last year new) he did say running battery down would kill a power pack. Just so happen my brother run down the battery trying to start it before we knew about the problem. 2nd mech told me the motor was to new for the stator to go out but once it does goes out it will never start until its replaced. Can anyone help me with this? It ran awesome last year.

If I were you, I would verify what is actually wrong with your ignition system rather than letting mechanics throw parts at it in the hopes that they can figure it out. CDI Electronics has a troubleshooting guide for your engine's ignition system. Get the Troubleshooting guide, a multimeter with a DVA adapter or Peak Voltage setting, and figure it out yourself. Its not that hard, and the guide will tell you which component is failing. power packs and stators are not cheap, but they are relatively easy to install yourself. Figure out where your problem is before you throw more expensive parts at a problem.
