After reading much information here about the importance of not grounding electrical equipment to an aluminum boat I've now removed all grounds from the boat and put them on a home run to the battery with a grounding block out to each unit. Some background the engine is model# E50TLEUC. The boat is a 1956 Starcraft 16' boat or at least that's what the paperwork says. Also I only run this boat in fresh water. There is no electrolysis going on at this point that I can find. But here's my first question - the outboard had a ground from the block to the boat and then back to the battery. Is there any mechanical reason to ground the outboard to the hull? Second question - isn't the outboard grounded to the hull by being bolted to the aluminum stern? If so, and I suspect it is, should this be isolated somehow? I've found many posts about batteries and electronics being grounded to the hull but none on the outboard itself. Thanks for your help!

When you say it has a ground from the block to the boat do you mean that the Blk 4Ga wire goes from the engine block to a bolt on the vessel? That Blk 4Ga wire should go uninterrupted from the engine to the "-" battery terminal.

No, you do not isolate the motor from the boat. That would be very hard to do.

Actually that wire goes uninterrupted to the battery as you say. There is an additional wire - more like 12 gauge - that is bolted to the engine block goes to a bolt on the stern and then goes to the battery. For the life of me I can't figure out what it could be for.

I agree and didn't understand how you could isolate the motor from the boat considering how it's mated up.

Thanks for the information.

Should have been more specific - goes to the negative side of the battery - the small wire.

Made no sense to me either. Going to remove it. The one thing rusting is the nut and bolt it's on. With that there will be no more ground wires to the hull. Thanks for the responses!

The nut and bolt THRU the hull is rusting? It needs to come out asap too, as do any other non-aluminum or non-stainless steel bolts, screws etc...

Just slight surface rust but it is something I'm going to replace now that I see it's rusting.

I've had to replace quite a bit of hardware on this boat that wasn't correct. Zinc and steel bolts all around it. Cost me a small fortune so far to do that. The PO used a lot of that stuff. This one bolt I missed. Might be more but they're few.
