I have 1 1997 Evinrude E175GL-EUE and my carb bowls were leaking. I bought new needle valves to replace them while I have it apart. I just removed the plastic part of the carb from the metal part of the body that includes the butterfly assembly. The needle valve is in the part that I left attached to the manifold. How far do I screw in the new needle valve? The spring is completely compressed before I feel any resistance at all. Thanks folks.

When you say "needle valve", you mean "Idle mixture adjustment screw", right? The spec for a '98 Johnny 175HPV6, 60* motor is 5 turns open from lightly seated. I would expect your engine is the same....

I read in the manual for my motor and it said 4 turns out from lightly seated is the starting point. The tension spring completely compresses before there is any feeling of seating at all, thus I have no reference point from which to back it out four turns. Everything refers to the needle valve just as that. A needle valve. I know it affects the mixture, but I have no idea at what point and now that I have it running, how to properly set them. I used a digital caliper to measure the distance between the shoulder of the needle valve to the body of the carb. I set the new ones at the average of all six old ones.

OK, that begs the question...why did you replace the Idle mixture screws? They are not normally replaced. Also, did you receive the correct replacements?
