It all began when I tried starting without the lanyard - for about 20 minutes.

The starter got heated up pretty hot. Once I figured out the lanyard was off I let the starter cool and charged the battery.

Now my issue - cranking over the engine to start has become difficult. Sometimes it will start but the previous cranking power is gone.

What do I need to change out to get back my starting power?

Much thanks.

Time for a new starter.

Yikes, 20 minutes! :)

Usually if the motor does not start within a few cranks, something is wrong.

Time to pull the starter apart as stated, might be able to rebuild it.

Re: 1997 Evenrude 30hp starting issue

It was actually my husband who broke the motor.

Anyway - he was having trouble removing the starter and called a local boat mechanic who said our year a 1996 is difficult to remove and would take them 20 minutes. Is this true? The starter re-build place happens to be next door to the guy who stated this. both of them are a 30 minute drive

If you have any tips and I could take it off please let me know. Also, is the rebuild that difficult?

I have previously re- built a sea doo GTX propulsion end complete and am fairly handy. We have reversed roles in our household.

20 minutes doesn't sound out of line.
But if you can replace it yourself, you could have a brand new starter shipped to your
door for $85...
