Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a 1197 Volvo/OMC with electronic fuel and electronic ignition.

After sitting for 5 months the motor will not run. - no spark.

I have checked the fule pump, injectors and have determine the proble out tot be no spark.

I have check for voltage at the coil, primary and secondary and all that checks out - next I checke the pick up coil and that too tested aight.

The book then suggest replacing the ignition module - here is my question - the book is directing me to remove the entire distibutor - Do you really have to do this? Or is there an easier way.

My concern is not so much removing it but rather having enough room to pull the distributor including he shaft and gear up and out. The ski boat we have has fiberglass above so it may hit it before the I can clear it all out... I would hate to have to remove the engine jut to pull the distributor.

I know someone here has done this already and if so any help or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Assuming you have the EST distributor (1197 Volvo/Omc is not a model number) the distributor does not have to be removed to replace the module. As long as you have access. There are only 2 screws and a wire connector.
Make sure you put on new Heat sink compound or silicone grease it's necessary for proper heat dissipation.

I have a 1999 Volvo Penta 5.0GL with Presolite distributor. (I think 4.3 might be same). Factory manual has wonderful troubleshooting shooting for module. I think Don has posted links to factory manuals, if not then buy one, best 15 dollars you will ever spend.

To answer you question yes you can as long as you have enough access to set the air gap from the trigger no reason to disturb the distributor.

If you can find the troubleshooting shooting PM me and I will summarize if you from my manual.

I have a 1999 Volvo Penta 5.0GL with Presolite distributor. (I think 4.3 might be same).

The Prestolite distributor was not used on engines with EFI.
