I recently bought a 97 25hp Mariner for 600.00. It was a display at a local Academy here in Houston. They were bringing in 2001 Mercury engines. We took it off the display stand and put it back in the box....I left almost running before they changed their mind. Everyone asks me if it is hot or something......but I have the receipt.

Any oppinions on these motors? After breakin and suggestions of what to change/maintain?

i have it on a 14' v-hull Mirro-craft. It runs great!

Thanks,
Wily

You mean to tell us you bought a new (as in not previously used) 1997 model 25 hp Mariner for $600??? If so...oh man. What a steal of a deal!

I don't know where the horsepower break is where Mariner's are Mercs only painted grey...but even so...geez!

Change the gear lube in her at the end of every season...always burn fresh 87 octane gasoline and a good quality TC-W3 two stroke oil, read and follow the manufacturer's recommendations...and that engine should give you many, many years of reliable service.

Nice catch!

Walt

Walt,
Yes 600....I paid for it and left before they could change their mind. The manager approved it and had someone help me box it up and load it up. New 2001 mercs (25m model) go for about 2100.00. This motor had never been started but was 4 years old. The thrust washer and nut were missing...18.00 at a local shop. I think the manager was under preasure to clear them out. I went back a few days later and the mercs were out on display.

Wily

I've been looking for a 25 hp merc for a year
You can't even buy junk for $600. If you've run it already change the gearlube now. Check for water. The seals have been known to dry up and leak if it sits to long.
All mariner & mercs are the same except for color.
