Hello everyone,
this is my first post here, purchased this 22' Angler WA from a friend who was the original owner, he overheated the engine last season. I stopped at the boat yard where the boat was stored and had a 30+ minute talk with the very nice mechanic there, who told me cylinder scoring was not bad at all, but it sounded like there could be some bearing damage (may have to cut crank), center section and lower unit are in great shape.

He strongly suggested I pull the powerhead (which went very smoothly BTW) and bring it to a shop. When I strip the block I will post more pictures, so you have more to go on.

Where is a good place to source rebuild "kits", I see some on ebay for under $1,000. I have no idea how much machine shop work on outboards could be, any idea?

The mechanic mentioned he could get me a new Merc block for $3,400, but if I could rebuild this for less with similar reliability I would like to take that route.

This evening I pulled the powerhead apart, things looked much better than expected. This is my first time doing this, holy crap are there a ton of little hoses running everywhere!!!!1 The cylinders do not look bad at all (maybe just hone), a number of the dividing rings on the crank were broken (not sure what these are called), all bearings looked OK.

My plan is to take the block and crank to a machine shop and have it all checked out. What do y'all think?

Took block, case, crank, heads to marine machine shop to have it checked, should hear results tomorrow.

Where do y'all suggest I buy Quicksilver parts (I want to use OE), rings, gasket kit, crankcase divider rings (not sure what they are called), etc?

Thanks,
John

I don't have any advice to give, but I need to do the same thing to my motor. Keep us posted!

I bought a good boat with a bad 115 merc because I have another bad boat with a good 115 merc. Plan was to sell the bad merc for parts. The engine won't completely turn over by hand, it seems to hang in the lower cylinder. I think the lower carb was plugged. Anyway, soon as the weather gets warmer I'm going to pull it apart and seem what I have. (The couple I bought it from told me it would idle fine but wouldn't go to full power - this is a 2+2 engine. They took it to the marina to have it looked at and got it back in this condition. )

Anyway, selling the bad boat and trailer and the bad engine for parts I'll be about even. If I can fix the bad engine I'll be ahead and I like doing that sort of work.

Labyrinth seals
The labyrinth seals are not used on a V-6, only the older inline engines. The V-6 is a just a seal ring.

Thanks for the replies. I should hear from the machine shop tomorrow or early next week.

Good news from the machine shop. They just had to slightly hone (de-glaze) the cylinders, and polish the crank, everything else was flat and/or within spec. Total bill was only $95.

So now I gota search around for all the bearings, and a gasket kit. Do you suggest Quicksilver parts or aftermarket? I see a lot of parts starting with GLM.

Thanks,
John
