I have a 1996 WaveVenture 1100 Triple that just started to overheat. I have checked the impeller grate and it is clear, but I did notice that just before the temp indicator came on , the engine was acting like it was missing or maybe had dropped a cylinder. Could a fouled plug in one of the cylinders cause both problems?

you probably have dirt in your hose that goes from the pump to the engine , overheating can cause engine damage and that can cause the engine to drop a cylinder or blow a head gasket or worse.

If that is the problem, how do I troubleshoot/correct the problem? If the pump hose to the engine was clogged, would the "roostertail" still work? This one does.

first do a compression check. I had 3 Yamahas with 1100s and they are really great motors. the overheating isnt as bad as the other guy made it out to be if you stopped soon enough. If you kept riding then yeah it can cause problems but most likely you jsut ran over a sand bar and clogged up the intake hose. The rooster has nothing to do with the cooling. thwe rooster tail is jsut a hose that comes off the pump reducer ( nipple) and shoots water out. More of a safety thing or looks IMo

You probably picked up a rock in your cooling system.

It is not at all likely that you fried your engine. The engine speed drops to idle when the overheat light comes on.

You have to start at the pump and work forward to check that every line is clear.

The best way is to remove each line and to blow air through it backwards.

I had a rock stuck in the tee for the fresh water rinse and it took forever to find it.

the hose that has the tee for fresh water flush, it appears to route to the exhaust side. Things are so tight in the engine bay I can't get my hose off without removing more parts, story of my life.

that's a 4-year old post - I hope the guy has gotten his problem cleared up by now.
