Re: 1996 volvo how do i remove the drive unit?

I will try to recall all the details, I have a single prop SX drive, but I think the details are the same. You remove the 3 3/8 screws that hold the plastic cover over the shift linkage. Under that you wil find a cotter pin holding the shift cable to the bell crank linkage, remove that cotter pin and washer. Un screw the cube nut that had the cotter pin thru it. Then unbolt the shift cable clamp from the back side of the drive (starboard side of the intermediate housing). Remove the C-clip that holds the trim cylinders to the drive and remove the pin. Remove the 6 elastic nuts holding the drive to the gimble housing. The drive is quite heavy so you can use a 1/2 threaded eye bolt in the hole for the dip stick tube and an engine hoist of a freind. I made awooden platform and that worked as well but be carefull, as I have an SX and I am sure you DP is heavier than a single prop. There sia rubber gasket (like an O-ring) that I think you should replace everytime under there. They say you should check the engine alinement as well while drive is removed, but I have never seen it off on my boats. I think that is it.

hello
now it gets tricky. is this a dpx or a swedish built DP. the swedish built upper and transom assy is nothing like the american built sx and dpx drives
the swedish is built almost like all other volvos and has a gimbal bearing in the engine bell housing. the american built and the xdp(not to be confused with the DP-x) have a replacable gimbal bearing in the transom assy. if you can describe excatly how your trim rams look I can tell you witch drive it is. or you can post the drive model. ie dp-c,dp-e,dp-,x-dp
good luck and keep posting

hello a small amount of steam from an exhaust can be normal. but it can indicate the need for maint, with the engine running the risers should never get more than warm. at speed they should be cold when new to warm just before replacement time. tell me about your power trim cylinders. are they located along side the top of the lower unit? or are they hidden inside the steering fork where you cannot see them> answer me that and I may be able to ID the basic drive set up.
good luck and keep posting

the trim units lay on the sides of the lower unit....the steam problem has me more worried though....i just got this boat and i dont know anything about inboard outboards....it does have a large amount of steam coming from the exhaust....there is only one place in the surrounding area that services volvo and they said they couldn't look at my boat bc they're back up for 4 months.....i have talked to some ppl here and they said a cloud of steam is normal when i am under way....how can i find out if i have a problem what should i look for?>??? i am pretty fed up with this boat and am thinking about trading it in..but i know i will lose money only had it for 2 months
