1996 v4 Evinrude no spark.

I have a 1996 90 hp Ocean Pro 60 degree motor. It was running perfect and then shut down while idling. It would not refire for 45 minutes and then fired up and ran for about 5 minutes before quiting again. Got towed off the water and brought it home. It fired up in the driveway ran for 5 minutes and quit again. I checked spark and found none. It seems I have an intermittent spark issue. Any ideas on what to check first?

there is an engine faq with lots of suggestions, i'm guessing wiring.

Go to cdielectronics.com. They have good trouble shooting procedures.

Check all wires and grounds see if any wires are coroded get a tester see whete the electric stops at

Excellent resource. One question, everything I've read states to disconnect the black and yellow wire from the power pack to see if the fault is within the motor electronics or the boats wiring. My power pack has a four pronged plug of which black and yellow is one pin. How am I supposed to disconnect just the black and yellow wire? There is no single connector on the black and yellow wire before it goes into the big red wiring harness plug. Can I just unplug the four pronged plug and check for spark?

I would have someone help you when you test and if you cant fix yourself it will cost you alot you may try to find moble servise to fix or locate problem on craigslist cause electrical will confuse you one minute gets electric next it wont alot of times could be just plugins you will end up getting mad so you might have to open up wallet but some guys work cheap but better get it done before memorial day or prices double

Disconnect the whole plug. It will also disable Quikstart and Slow as possible probs.

Still no spark with the four pronged plug removed. I borrowed a key switch and a cannon plug from a friend who used to work on omc engines. It makes testing much easier. I just ordered a cdi power pack. I hope that does it.
