Hey guys,

I'm going to go pick up a 1996 bayliner jazz from a friend in tennessee next weekend. It has starting issues...I've seen abd been on this boat a few times and its a lot of fun, I'm paying $1500 for it. He told me the last time he tried to start it, it wouldent. I'm sure it could be a number if things it does crank and pumps fuel. I've seen it do this before and run the whole next day.

Anyways, ive been reading old posts on here and am wondering about the stator issue. I've read that the black ones go out and need the upgraded red ones but I've also read that the 96 120 has the red one, is this true? I'm not sure if this engine is just the sj 120 or the other 120 that has xt or whatever the letters are after lol id look it up but im at work and don't have much time I'm sorry . Is like to order the stator now but without looking i have no idea what it came with abd if im going to need the kit if that us even the problem, so ut woukd be nice to know if the 1996 120 came with the red or not. It would also be nice to know where a good place would be to buy one ill probably need a manual too so if anyone can point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post

not sure of the manual but I'm sure you can get one here or ebay boats.net there is a number of test on it

here is a link for my motor and test but yours is there to just look through the index and it will help alot before you get a manual good luck

You got it backwards, red is the one that fails and black is the good one.

It depends on if it has CDM modules or switchbox.... as for history it just a modified 4 cylinder Chrysler engine

If memory serves me well, the red was stock and the replacement is the black when the red fails and it will. You can still buy the red's, I see them ocassionally but no one I know does.

I think I remember reading something about those.. I don't remember that it was all that good either. Take that with a grain of salt though, it might have been on a forum.

Nothing seems to be good about this engine... But if I can learn it im willing to keep working on it and keep it going. I now know the engine is a 1996 oil injected 120xr.
Well I got the boat home cleaned it up yesterday and saved any any engine dispointment for today...
I wasnt let down,
It doesnt look too grim though right now but it wont start. I do have spark in #1 cylnder (the top cyl anyways, im not sure how the cylnders are numbered, my first boat and verticle 4 cylnder) I didnt get to checking the rest yet or for compression\. i have fresh fuel. I took the bowls off the carbs and the floats seem to be working fine. I cranked a little and they filled back up so i cranked on it a couple more times for about 6 or seconds each time and still had no signs of life. I noticed It didnt smell like it was flooded but i did just syphon all the gas out and my fresh gas source was a gas can in the back so it was sorta in the air I suppose, I saw nothing dripping from the carbs either.
I am trying to start it out of water and I have no flush kit and no idea where to find one for my boat, Im not sure how bad it is to start one out of the water or if there is a kill switch or something that would prevent it from lack of cooling pressure or something but im not planning to have it running for more than a few 3-4 seconds if it does fire up. also if there was some kind of kill switch ir a rev limitor problem then i shouldent have spark right? ive heard somewhere in a different old forum that the limitor mite just cut the 3,4 cylnders off I havent tested any others for spark yet.

Any ideas anyone? I would appreciate it

Took the #1 spark plug ot was still sparking and it started, I was super happy about that. I put the plug back in and it wouldent start...took it back out and again it started..well i wondered if i wasnt cranking fast enough and it worked because there was less compression pressure so i hooked up a battery charger turned it to 125amp start and it started so i shut it off tried starting it again and it did and then BOOM! smoke filled my garage, I just there looking like Wile E. Cyote...I wasnt sure about starting this boat out of water,Im very sure now DONT DO IT! i blew the ride plate out, I hope someone can come across this thread and learn from my mistake.
Anyone know about any parts ill need while im here?and where to find them. i cant seem to find a plate online anywhere. aslo i had a fully charged battery that i charged on 2 amp for 20 hours and sounded strong so why would it only start when i have more power to it? were my plugs sparking better? what would cause weak spark if so? please help feeling down and dumb...
