I own a 1996 Mercury Force 90hp outboard. Last fall I was driving the boat and when going from drive to neutral, I unintentionally went into reverse. In doing so, I heard a grinding sound, then lost the ability to go forward. However, the boat does go in reverse.
In researching this, I believe I stripped out the drive gear in the lower end. I've taken off the lower end, but I'm hesitant to take it apart. I am a handy person, but am unsure of what I'm doing in regards to this repair. As of now, I am planning to replace all of the gears in the lower end and the seals while I'm in there.
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how to tackle this project and what I should be doing to fix the issue?
