1996 Mercury 25EL Tilt Problem

I just purchased a 1996 Mercury 25EL for a Whaler.<br /><br />The tilt lock (down position) seems to be engaged at all times, reverse, neutral and forward.<br /><br />Now, I understand it being locked in reverse, but the others? neutral and forward....??<br /><br />I see that there is a rod going from the locking mechanism up into the upper engine.<br />I imagine that this is what is broken.<br /><br />Let me know if this something I can fix, or should I bring it to the shop.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Dave

Get the boat where you can observe the operation of the lock May be just a loose, broken or jammed external part. See if the parts at the lock seem to be moving and study how it releases the lock<br />if the problem is where you can see it should be a simple fix. Not much help I know but the lock on my Evinrude wasnt latching and it was just bent. Spike

Thanks, Its not bent or anything. The problem seems to be in mechanism the the "bar" is attached to in the engine.
