Re: 1996 Mercury 100 HP Oil Injection
never saw an oil pump or drive gear failure on that engine.
most failures involved customer inaction.
the low tank level alarm was and is iffy at best, lots of false alarms and the occasional no alarm and the customer ran it smooth out of oil.
the other problem was the vynil oil lines get hard over time and break leading to a loss of engine lubrication.
both problems are incredibly easy to fix.
first top off the oil tank before using, that tank holds enough oil for about 100 gallons of fuel at WOT.
second periodically replace your oil lines.
in any case grab them and twist and tug, if they break they were due for replacement anyway.
the last is periodically rebuild your fuel pump as this is where the mixing takes place and can prevent lean outs at high speeds anyway.
its all simple maint that can be done in the driveway for little expense.
fail to do it and it cant be fixed in the yard and can get very costly.
