I am going to look at a used 1996 Maxum with a Mercruiser 3.0 /Alpha 1 on it. A mechanic checked it out and noted a grainy sound. I saw the boat a couple weeks ago and it did not look abused at all. The same mechanic said the engine sounds great, oil is clean and compression fine. I estimated $250 to replace the gimble but could I be in for more than that?

Grainy sound??? first time I heard it called that but I guess it could sound like that.

Sounds like the gimble never got "seasonal" grease... should be OK when replaced. I do not forsee any other issues to deal with other regular maintenance to end the year. Good luck... Maxum's are pretty good boats... my friend has one & it takes his abuse... so it has to be good!!!

:)
