What is this noise?! It doesn't make this noise when it's reved up in neutral, only when in gear under a load. I've pull the unit off and the u joints look and feel good. The gimbal bearing also looks and feels good. What do I need to check next? Exhaust shutters?

Either detonation or blown head gasket letting water in cylinder. What do spark plugs look like and was it over heated

That's time for a compression test if you're curious as to which hole(s) are dead

Otherwise skip the compression test and start tearing down your whipped engine

Best case, valve job. Worst case, long block

Thank you all for the information. Sounds like it's time to cut this one loose.
Or you could fix it...but a friendly tip: ditch the Fram oil filters in the future. They are absolute garbage. Worst filters on the market, especially for a marine engine.

Thank you for the information about the filter. I out of money for this boat.
