First, I apologize if a similar topic has been addressed, but I had little success w/ a search.
1996 merc 50 merc 50 is mounted 165 a 16.5 foot boat. It starts fine when ie cold (ie first start of the day). However, 2540 a 25-40 min run to the fishing spot 13 by 1-3 hrs on the trolling motor, the motor is very difficult to start. And it never starts following the same steps twice in a row. I can usually get it started after pulling the cover,

So far. I've replaced, carb cleanerseafoam and run carb cleaner/seafoam through. I replaced the carbs lines to the carbs (following a broken line, the problem existed before the break), I just got it back from the shop carbs they adjusted the carbs, repaired the remaining fuel leak and adjusted the shift mechanism. We also noticed that the primer bulb gets soft and tried to squeeze it to increase the fuel pressure again, with limited results.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. I figured it's some type of vapor lock.

Needless to say, the boat is going back into the shop, i just wanted an idea of what might be wrong.

Most of my experiences of that sort were caused by an ignition coil. Today it could also include a solid state ignition switch (replacment for ignition points).
