I purchased a used 1996 Mariner 9.9hp 4S outboard and I can’t get it to start. Precious owner said he had it running a couple of weeks ago and that it’s always been reliable.

I tested with starting fluid with no luck then pulled the plugs to confirm no spark on either.

I also disconnected the push button and lanyard switch to confirm they weren’t preventing spark, but still no luck. Is there anything else I can rule out before checking stator, cdi, coil etc?

Confirm the plug wire is good, use a volt/ohm meter to confirm continuity thru the wire. If the wire is good, keep moving upstream to the magnito. Confirm mag clearence to the flywheel magnet (get specs from dlr)
