I wanted to get some feedback on a1996 25 Hp I can pick up cheap. the person said he had a water pump go bad and it overheated. He said he shut it off then got it home. He started it one time shut it off before it overheated again but now it won't start. He said it turns free and thinks it broke a ring. I wanted to know is this typical type of damage from an overheated 25 hp Johnson. is it typical when an outboard overheats they cylinder warp and needed to be sleeved when rebored? any possibly the heat did something to his electronic ignition system? thanks, for any input JB

Depends on how badly it overheated.----Look the wiring over very carefully.----It may be insulation melted and wires are bare.----Possibly a $200 motor or less.----Compression test is next before handing over any coins.

The damage will depend entirely on how badly overheated at idle, fast idle or at wot. due to an impeller issue when algae, plastic is sucked by the lower intake ports, due to thermostat failure, excesive salt formation inside the whole powerhead water paths, a combo of both.

Worse case is at wot in which will end melting cable sleeves, discolor powerhead, blowing/damaging all gaskets around the cylinder area and even warping the powerhead badly.

If the overheat was not a huge one and depending on which described scenarios happened will need to : check the impeller condition, retorque cylinder head, and exhaust cover bolts back to specs, install new plugs and water test the motor.

Happy boating

Take along a compression tester and spark tester. If the seller is willing and the powerhead is not seized, you can check both quite easily.
