This is my first post I have been reading for a while and finally decided to jump in.

I recently took my boat to a jackleg boat mechanic. I found him on craigslist and ofcourse if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. I burnt up the #2 cylinder on my 96 200 johnson. This guy said he was gonna do a bunch of stuff and I know he didn't do atleast half of. He was supposed to bore all 6 cylinders, all new ringss and pistons, for one thing. I pulled up three days after my block came back and saw the block powerhead withh the heads off. Only the one cylinder had been done and had a used piston, and all the otherr pistons were originall. Needless to say, I am sure he wasn't gonna tell me about this. He said that the other cylinders were good and it was better to leave them alone. Ok, I am fine with that, but we have to renegotiate money. So, he gets the motor put back togeher and calls me and says there is an electrical problem, and the motor won't run right. When I come to get the boat I can tell that he has swapped out power pack, coils, and timer assembly. My motor has never touched salt water and was a clean and pretty as the day it came off the showroom floor whee I took it. The powerpack cables were chewed up ,and the coils and timer assemly had corrosion on it. He denies it, and says he wantss the balance of what i owe him. I told him I wanted my money back.

Anyway, now I am trying to figure out what he did and didn't do to my motor.

I checked compression and got between 90 and 95 on all six cyl. warm with wot. He had told me that my motor was getting 120 plus on all 6.

Do you think he even put new rings(he says yes)?

Oh he also, smashed my fuel/vro pump, I told him I wanted a brand new one and it is a used one. I have now removed it.

Now the motor starts and idles a2000 rpms. Still trying to figure it out. I think something is wrong with the timing.

Was mainly wondering about my compression, I have always heard 120???

As far as the compression goes, 90-95psi is normal for the big V-6 loopers, even after a rebuild. But everything else sounds like a nightmare! How much did he charge you in the first place? It is acceptable to re-use pistons, but at a minimum they need new rings, and the cylinders need to be honed. And that is only if the taper is within specs. I hope he gave you a written reciept of the work performed, and what he charged. Then you can take the motor to a CERTIFIED mechanic and have him verify the work. You may have a small claims lawsuit on your hands if you can get some evidence.

Those V6s dont have very high compression they are usually within the 90-100 range.

When you get a powerhead rebuilt at any reputable shop, they will insist on new stats, new VRO and new impeller. If they warranty it, those items are all necessary. You don't want to have any problems with an expensive overhaul.... Yes, they should have re-ringed each piston and honed the cyls.

Grassi, I see you're in Savannah. You've really got me wondering if that's the same guy I bought an engine from, was his name Frank Matthews?. The guy claimed he's an outboard mechanic, talked a really good line, yet the engine I bought turned out to be a nightmare. Oh, it was painted real nice, but once I started finding issues it became obvious someone had just thrown together a collection of parts in order to make a sale. If that's him and you decide to go to small claims court I wonder if there's any way I could help you out (maybe a letter detailing my experiences to show that yours wasn't an isolated incident).

Well the total for the job was supposed to be 2700.00. That was for 6 new pistons and rings, hone 6 cyl, new water pump, clean gas tanks, 6 month warranty, and alot of other stuff he said he would do, but those things are on my reciept. Against my better judgement I gave him 1200 up front. This guy is in Charleston, another thing he said which is the main reason I took it to him is that he could have it done in 7 to 10 days(also on reciept). So, after having it 6 weeks he didn't do one of those things. The only thing I know he did was get the damaged cylinder sleeved and put a used piston in it.

As far as the electrical he switched, I don't know how to prove he swapped the electrical. You can look at the wires coming out the power pack and they are way dirtier and faded than the clean wires they plug into. what fiirst made me check was that there were wasco stickers on the power pack, I said my power pack didn't have stickers on it, so he said he put them on there.

There was a boat with a 98 johnson 225 there when I checked on my boat. And it was gone when I came back to pick it up. I figure he sold that guy my stuff and told him it was brand new.

I can get it to start in the yard, but I don't wanna take it to the river until figure it out, something is not right.. It idles real high, and the F N R linkage is way off, I put it in gear and it made a God awful noise.

I would not recommend going to Grady/Whitney Dubose in Mt. Pleasant SC.

I'm wondering if you'd get anywhere by contacting the local law enforcement and filing a complaint against him for theft. As you say, it would be difficult to prove beyond a shadow of doubt that he stole your power pack, but if nothing else it might make him sweat a little.
