recently my 96 force 75 has a gas smell to it when shut down. i have looked for a leak bt can find none. I have noticed that the carb seems to emit a lot of dark oily residue in the front part of the cowling. Are my reeds going bard? It runs good and idles good.

If the motors tilted at all. it can cause excess fuel to run out of the carb.
Try: compression test. Check fuel lines for soft, mushy or loose connections.
Start and run.Check for drips and blow back while ideling.

Im chasing a pesky fuel leak at the moment too, mine has a generic fuel line and tacky primer bulb my fuel tank is a custom stainless cruise tank it has the old OMC twin barb fitting on the tank, this leaks I have changed it with a new one but same prob, so Im going to change the tank fittings to something else maybe original Chrysler fittings, Ill change the hose and primer bulb, the primer bulbs seem to have these real cheesy thin metal bands to act as hose clamps the fuel is getting out around these, I changed to auto clamps on the hose ends and this stopped the leak until they started leaking where the tails go into the bulb, I cant win a trick with this fuel system at the moment

PS i also find if I leave my motor in the tilted position my carbys also drip fuel/ oil , doesnt seem to hurt it, i didnt realise just how critical a well sealed fuel system is too an outboard.

The OMC/Johnson fitting are the better of the two.
Chrysler/Force have a way of going bad and sucking air.
When I got my boat in 88 The first thing I did was cut out the connectors.
Put in a good squeezie(no tempo) and stainless clamps.
Pay the extra and get e-resistant hoses.
