1996 Evinrude - Fuel line connector won't fit on motor's fuel connector

I tried both an Attwood OMC/Johnson/Evinrude fuel connector and a Moeller. Both and both fit on the tank connection (it's an OMC / Evin / Johnson tank connector), but not the motor. They won't fit because the pointed barb on the motor's connector is too large in diameter. I tired drilling a connector's barb hole out and it was just short of snapping shut.

Do they use a different connector on the motor vs the fuel tanks? I have a connector that fits - it came with the boat on the onboard tank's fuel line, but I wanted an extra to make a portable tank line.

My buddy thought that maybe someone replaced the motor's fuel connector, but it appears to be the same as the replacement part - 0393334 FUEL CONN. BODY AY.

This is a 1996 88 HP SPL E88TSLEDR model. I am tempted to order a 0393334 part to replace the one on the motor, but I wanted to get confirmation that the tank connector and the motor connector are one in the same.

Please let me know if this is the case. Do they use different connectors for motor vs tank? I don't think so, but I am now not sure.

Thanks as always for the assistance.

It is possible that the sleeve from inside my existing connector got left behind on the barb? This is making the most sense. I just saw someone mention this. I will check the barb on the motor's fuel connector to see if there's a sleeve left behind. This makes the most sense so far.

I've had the sleeve left behind trick happen to me some years back. Check all the connectors closely.

It was exactly that. The sleeve for the barb was left on the engine's barb.
