1996 Evinrude 40 Tiller, Shift Shaft (Rod)?

Hello all! I have a 1996 Evinrude 40HP with a tiller handle, E40TEEDS. I just finished a water pump install and noticed the bushing (333780) for the shift rod was broke so I ordered parts. I measured the height of the shift rod before I removed it in order to replace the bushing and noticed the rod was bent slightly. I measured my shift rod and from end to end it measures 24", there are two numbers listed for the rod, one is 332509 which is listed as the standard rod measuring 15" and the other one is 332510 which is listed as the long rod measuring 20". Maybe the rod isn't measured from end to end and I have the 20" but how do I know? I'm not sure how the rod would have bent but I reinstalled the gearcase to the motor and thought I would replace the shift rod next year when I do another water pump rebuild.
