I have a 96 Evinrude 150 that has started sounding the overheat alarm and the overheat light every time I start the engine. Thing is, its not overheating. The boat can sit for a week and when I start it the alarm immediately sounds. The shop manual is kinda fuzzy on this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Defective temp sender or shorted sensor wire?

Disconnect the port sensor wire, see if it stops.
That will tell you if its shorted out..

The system check tach's from that era are know to go bad, many didn't last a year before doing odd things. My first one did the same thing, turn on the key and the alarm would sound, the next one the alarms work correctly, but the tach stopped working.

If it is the original gauge, then that may be the problem if it is not a shorted temp switch wire somewhere. Borrow a good gauge then plug it in and see if the problem goes away.

Disconnect the sensor wire AT the guage, if it keeps sounding the guage is shorted.
You might have to pull the sensor wire from the connector plug at the guage.
