1996 Evinrude 115 starts hard

I just bought a larson bowrider with 115 Evinrude. The guy I bought it from told me it started hard. He supposedly had it fixed. When I test drove it the thing started very easily. Last 2 times I have tried it starts hard. You can just hold the key on and the engine would turn over but wouldn't start. I squeezed the bulb a few times until it was hard. I then pushed the throttle ahead in neutral to give it some gas. It sounds like it is not getting gas. When it finally does start you can shut it off and it starts right back up. I don't know if I'm not squeezing the bulb enough or to much or the choke doesn't set or what. I am use to a fuel injected I/O. I have ordered a clymer manual but I know very little about motors. My father always use to run evinrudes so I thought I would. I didn't remeber him having any problems with it. Any help would be appreciated.

I could be wrong but if you have a '96 model 115 I don't think you have a choke mechanism. My '96 Johnson 130 uses a fuel primer to "choke" the engine. It doesn't have actual covers over the carbs instead when you hold in the key in the on position it injects fuel into the intake. If this isn't working or you're not using it right it'll make for some very hard cold starting.

Good luck,

Mike

Try this --
1-Pump the fuel bulb up tight.
2-Turn the key to the "on" position.
3-Push the key in (do not turn the key to the start position) and hold for an 8 count.
4-Turn the key to the start position.

You may have to tap the key in a few times til the motor warms up. The motor will be in "Quick Start" (fast idle) for a short time. Don't shift it while it's in this mode.

Pushing the key in releases fuel into the motor thru the primer. The trick is to relaease fuel in first and then engage the starter.

Good luck!

I would like to thank all who responded. The last person (DHadley)that responded was right. It is much easier to start now. Thanks. I'm relieved it wasn't a major mechanical problem.

DHadley's right. I had that same motor for five years. Great motor! You shouldn't have to advance the throttle during cold start. the "quick start" does it all for you. It advances the ignition during warm-up. When the idle speed drops, you're ready to go.

As far as pushing in the key, you'll find the drill that works best for you. By the way, make sure you have the kill switch and lanyard attached. The motor will run without it, but pushing in the key with the motor running will shut 'er down. Incidentally, this can result in some terrifying moments. Like running out an inlet during a strong swell, causing the guy next to you to lurch forward and strike the key while you're climbimg a pretty good sized wave. I'm not saying it happened to me, but the experience will make you a believer in kill switch apparatus!

Hope you enjoy that motor as much as I did. It sure has a lot of power for a 115.

I had the same starting problems as Evin with my '97 Evinrude 115. Since I saw Dhadley's reply above I've been using "the 4 steps technique" and it's been firing first time every time, ever since. Dhadley's a legend...

This really works.
I have an Evinrude OceanPro 175 V6. It sometimes was hard to start cold, but with this method it goes every time. Cool!
