I just got over a similiar experience. The motor would shut off mysteriously at a variety of RPMs, including idle. Always was able to restart. I replaced the power pack and sensor. Takes about an hour, a little fussy but not bad. Total cost about $225.00. I got the parts at a 10% discount from Ralph at
www.theoutboardwizard.com I have a pair of 1996 Evinrude Ocean Pros, 175 HP. My problem was with the starboard motor...maybe I have something to look foward to again. Hope this helps.
