Hi, Can anyone tell me how the speedo on my 96 Bayliner Capri 1750 LS works?

It always take a minute or so after starting to tow a skier for the needle to creep up to speed. I can't see anywhere obvious that the head unit is driven from & thought that if it's like a pitot tube perhaps is was partially blocked?

If anyone has had & cured a similar issue, I would really appreciate your advice.

Thanks & have a Merry Christmas, Chris

Try a small wire in the pitot at the back of the boat. If no help pull the tube off the back of the speedo and put some compressed air to it to blow out the crud.

Since you didn't say I/O or OB, you may have to look for the pitot. If it's a gen II it will be a little nick in the front edge of the lower unit.

When asking questions like this we need the drive system info as it could have a VP, OMC or MC drive if not an outboard. The boat mfg. rarely helps. It's kinda like saying "I have a sports coupe, what spark plugs do I need?"

Welcome to iboats!

Based on the year and model, I'm guessing you have a 3.0L MerCruiser with an Alpha 1 outdrive. The pitot may be built into the outdrive, as cr2k has suggested.
