1996 Bayliner Capri - over voltage?

I have a 96 Bayliner Capri (1850) and noticed that when underway the volt meter is buried on the positive side, well over 14 volts. Does this sound like a faulty voltmeter or something more?

I would use a portable volt meter to see what you really have. There's no other way to know. It could be the gauge, it could be the regulator. I wouldn't run it much without knowing. If you have 16 volts or so you will cook your battery and possibly fry some electronics.

Not knowing what engine you have makes it hard to tell if this is normal or not. some outboards do not have a voltage regulator and because those engines generally do not have very high output alternators, the battery regulates things. It is common to see voltage at wide open throttle to be 16 volts. If you have an I/O there is a voltage regulator problem. Since in a previous post you are adding a stereo, you might want to check the voltage range for whatever you plan to install. Most modern electrics that operate from a 12 volt supply have aan operating range of about 11 volts to about 16 volts. If the system goes above or below those specs the unit will shut down.

Thanks you for the input. The boat is an I/O, with the 3.0
Mercruiser, alpha one.

Is the voltage regulator internal to the alternator?

Ayuh,... Then you either have a gauge problem, or an alternator problem...

A multimeter will lead ya to the correct answer....
