Alright I have posted here before about how to go about replacing the water pump which I thought now was time to make sure she pumped, the motor is a 1996 Mercury 9.9 Tracker. I do not have a tank or fuel lines for the engine. I did have some 1/4 inch fuel line brand new to feed directly to the carb hook up. I set a 1 gallon gas tank on a ladder with the cap off and the fuel line in the fuel. I siphoned the gas till it freely poured out and quickly hooked up to the carb. The carb had gas spewing out on top of it where it says "Top". I know I should get all the correct fuel lines and tank but I wanted to see if it ran. Im wondering if im just forcing the float to stay open with the pressure of the fuel, just wondering if this is a issue or should It be fine if I get the correct fuel delivery system. After unflooding the carb the motor runs great with what fuel was left inside.

Also the engine does pump water nicely... :)

At the very least get the motor connector and a primer bulb then give it a try. Then see if you have problems. When you by passed the fuel filter you run the risk of having a chunk of some thing plug a jet.

There is a connector on the motor but I was just going to buy all new connectors fuel line, bulb, and tank so its done right and brand new. This carb also I rebuilt the only thing that did not come with the kit was a new float needle and float.

I understand what your doing and why. Motor stuff gets expensive after awhile and you really want hear it run, believe me I know. My present motor on my pontoon is also a 1996, 9.9 tracker / mariner. I bought it knowing it was messed up but it was the only one I could find with in 300 miles, and I have had to go through most all of it and have dropped at least 400.00 back into it to fix the PO stupidity.

The only good news I can give you is I believe its one of the rare ones that can be changed to a 15, Like I did to mine over last winter.

The float and the needle is the most important parts. it regulates and stops the fuel flow and is responsible for 90 % of carb flooding. So that is more than likely the cause, but until its hooked like it should be its a pure guess.

If gas is pouring out as described, then it's likely the float valve is stuck open. Time to pull the carb apart and clean it up.

Spent several hours cleaning the carb during the rebuild if it is the float valve or float like some are saying im just going to replace them since that was the only 2 parts that did not come in the kit.

Hi Guys,
there isn't any reason to buy a new float and needle. The 2000 9.9 four stroke has had a problem with sticking floats. The pin is too tight a fit and seems to bind up with time. the needle can also get jammed up into the seat if it has a rubber tip and you forget to disconect a fuel line on a hot day with the tank vent closed. If the rubber tip has a ring around it replace it. Just loosen up the hole where the pin goes through and you are good to go. This is a very simple system, no magic here if the float floats and doesn't have fuel inside of it it will work.

And a 1996 2 stroke is some what different. The OP problem isnt a sticking issue, its flooding issue and most times thats from wear or harding on the rubber tip or the float has absorbed gas and isnt floating to spec to seal it off.

I cannot find where I can buy just the float needle. I can find the float...
