Have done all I can to find a tachometer for this motor," sending back 2 tach's already", I am told it is a 16 Amp stator and finding it almost impossible to find a tach that works with this motor, does anyone have any idea, thanks in advance!

Shouldn't be a problem with any standard tach.
Maybe tell us what tachs you have tried?
Stator aims shouldn't matters the signal comes from the voltage rectifier.

What does it do or not do when installed?
Is it getting a signal from the engine?

No offense but are you sure of the year? 1996 Mercury / Force ?

Update, my mechanic told me yesterday, that he has found a shorted wire coming from start / stop key switch, which he thinks may have shorted the voltage regulator out therefore not producing a voltage signal on the gray wire to the tach, but he did said 1 tach I bought was bad from the sender, "per his input". The 2nd tach, he think is good, but have a bad voltage regulator. With the short fixed now, he think he can get the tach to work once he replaces the V.R., time will tell, Thanks both for your reply and input, both of you provide great assistance, which is getting harder and harder to find it seems on outboard motors, in may area anyway, (Durham NC). My current mechanic is around 72 years old.

OK, wanted to follow up with an update: My mechanic found a shorted wire, that looked to be a negative wire, and was landed under a grounding location. After careful review, under the flywheel the wire could be seen with a yellow stripe on it, that was wore off once it came out from under the flywheel. This turned out to be the issue, ordered a new tach, (Multi Use) tach and would work on a 3 pole, 6 pole up to a 20 pole motor and it did. (part # 59703P), AS for the spark plug debate I have read for these motors, (1996-75 HP -Force) BUZHW is believed to be the correct plug for this motor,, and proved to be a issue finding them, I ended up ordering from Pro Marine in Florida @ $11.03 a piece, have yet to receive them to install but are on the way, will advise that outcome. (thanks for reading)
