Fellow boaters:

I am considering purchasing a boat with a 1996 60 HP Mariner on it. Looks clean and very well cared for. Will try out before purchase. I would like to know if anyone can give me info on this particular engine.

1) Any known problems inherent to this model
2) Start easily (warm and cold)
3) Easy or hard to mantain
4) Are parts still readily available
5) Is this motor the same as a Mercury
6) Any other helpful info you may be able to share

Thankyou for any help

1) Any known problems inherent to this model....... Do not lug it and keep propped at max rpm even if used for sking/tubing as sleeves slip
2) Start easily (warm and cold).....If in good condition yes to both
3) Easy or hard to mantain....On 1-10 scale about a 5
4) Are parts still readily available.....yes
5) Is this motor the same as a Mercury......yes
6) Any other helpful info you may be able to share

Re: 1996 60 hp Mariner Opinions and Knowledge

Came to agreement for purchase with owner. Tested out at nearby lake. The engine warning system beeped the whole time we test drove it. Plenty of warm water water comming out of discharge port. Engine smoked and appeared to be getting oil. Overall engine ran and idled well. Did not complete deal because of beeping. Owner called back a few days later and says he has boat in shop and that the problem is a stuck float in the oil resovoir. He will have repaired and call me when finished. Wondering what to do now? Any discussion would be helpful.
