sjp1, take the hood off with it running. There is a water telltale hose that normally fits on a little barb that goes through the plate under the hood and shows you that you have cooling water. I'd guess that rubber hose has come off the barb or off the fitting on the motor and the cooling water is pooling under the hood until it finds a place to come out.

Charlie

its50hp honda motorand the water is coming out of the hole in the back of the motor below the hood i dont know what it is for maybe a crankcase vent or part of the exhaust system?this happens when the motor is hot. i am worried that the head is cracked.there is no water pooling under the hood. thank you for the replies.

Just a dumb question- no insult intended....how does it run? Any signs of over heating or rough running?

I am guessing that CHarlie has hit it right on the head here. If everything else is normal that is.

no runs rough at an idle and is low on power takes forever to get baot to plane out. the motor was overheated once a couple of years ago so it probably is a major problem. i was hoping someone had seen this before and it was something cheap to fix like a gasket.

sounds to me like he's describing the pee hole. how many holes are there on an outboard?

Re: 1996 50 hp problem

This could be a number of things. If it overheated at some point, this has the potential of being a bit more complicated. Why did it overheat? Toasted impellor? Clogged intake or passages? Running out of the water? First of all to see if there was any damage from that original overheating and to help diagnose the idle issue, we need to know what the compression is on all cylinders. Compression should range only about 10% from cylinder to cylinder. Whats the oil look like? Milky?

You were unclear on whether you have you run it with the cowl off to try to see where the water is coming from.

Re: 1996 50 hp problem

it over heated because the impeller is no good.oilwasnt milky and the hole where the water is coming out of is at the back of the motor.with the hood on it is about 3'below bottom of hood at the rear of the outboard.

sjp1, get ahold of yourself (not literally). Pull the cover off the engine with it running and see where the water is coming from.

Charlie

Re: 1996 50 hp problem

There is no water leaking under the hood.i was going by memory and i said the hole is 3"below bottom of the hood on backside of the outbaoard but it is more like 10" under the hood on backside of outboard(not engine). idont know what this hole is maybe part of exhaust, crankcase vent i have know idea what its for butit is kind of rectangular in shape its in cast aluminum peice with a plastic cover comletly over this aluminum body.it is dead center in the rear of out board where its tappered thin toward bottom end.who knows maybe water is supposed to come from there i am just trying to find out for sure.

Re: 1996 50 hp problem

sounds like you are describing your oil drain
assembly. does it have a screw in the middle ?
if so, this is where you drain the oil from
when you change the engine oil.
there should not be water coming out of this area.
pull the black tube off the plastic ***
and blow some compressed air up it.

quite often this will dislodge any material
the could be fouling it.

also does your overheat alarm come in when running on the muffs ?
