I have a 1996 48hp Evinrude on my pontoon boat and we had it out on Sunday, we use the boat here in upstate NY and we have not had any rain in a long time and the lake is low to make a long story short I hit a rock and shut the motor down I checked the prop just one blade was scraped not a lot of meat (I have seen a lot worse) was gone, I tried to turn the prop by hand and it only mover a little each way so I started the motor and put in forward and the prop wont spin and went to reverse nothing shut the motor off tried to spin the prop and it spins free now, I know something broke being there is no shear pin for the prop. So my question is what is the most common thing to happen when you hit a rock with a late 90's 40-48 or 50hp Evinrude??? Is there a shear pin in the gear case? does a gear break or strip some teeth off? what could it be? I want to check on parts it might need before I tare it apart and if its going to be a big expense for parts (I will be doing the labor) then I will put the 85hp Mercury back on it for the rest of the summer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like you definetely have something gone astray iin the gearbox.

here is a link to a breakdown of your gearbox.

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...ESLEDC&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Gearcase

As you can see there are a few things in there to give you trouble. If you're thinking of attempting to resolve this yourself there are one or two specialist tools needed to remove the parts in the lower unit such as pullers to remove the bearing housing.

If you do decide to go at it, then just post your findings up here and someone will be able to pinpoint your problem and aid you in fixing it. Having said that some parts in a gearbox aren't cheap, it may be worth keeping an eye open for a damaged motor with a good lower unit.

Well after tearing into the gear case I found the shifter clutch dog had shattered and nicked a few teeth on the Forward & reverse Gears but not the pinion gear and nicked the prop shaft where the shifter clutch dog rides but i think it can be filed down to work smoothly, should the gears be replaced? I found the Forward - Pinion & reverse Gears and shifter clutch dog as a kit new for $259.00 with free shipping and a lower unit seal kit for $42.73 that's $301.73 total

Look at the Top Secret Files at the begining of this forum and check out salvage yards.

Those gearboxes were a total disaster!! If you want something that fits better on your pontoon boat, try to find a 45 commercial box and put on. Even the old type 40-50-60 (2-cyl) are better and more reliable.
