I'm in the process of replacing the lighting coil and rectifier for no charging of battery. I have also noticed my Yamaha multi gauge is getting no rpm input on the tachometer, it just reads 0 at any rpm. I to have noticed a rich or loading condition while idling or extended low speed trolling. No problem starting regardless of ambient air temp. or performance at speed. This motor never really loaded up or smoked prior, could idle or troll for long periods of time. My question is seeing the thermo valve receives power from the blue wire coming from the lighting coil can I expect these issues to be resolves by changing out the lighting coil and rectifier. Thanks in advance for your input.

Do you have a P60 or an E60? Those were the only two 60 HP two stroke models offered by Yamaha USA for 1995.

Very rare for both the lighting coil and the R/R to both go bad at the same time. Have you actually tested both of them?

P60, only have digital meter per manual can't be used due to low ohm testing less than 10 ohm. when I did test with digital meter per manual testing guide lines I got no readings. Kind of a long story but finished fishing for the day and was heading in when engine started running bad. made it back to landing and removed cowl. entire power head was drenched. upon closer inspection at home discovered all power head bolts snapped, front of exhaust guide casting broken. Removed power head, discovered bolts broken flush or very slightly below base of power head. I was able to remove 5 of the 6 longer bolts snapped off inside power head casting (5 1/2 hours later) without damaging threads the sixth I was able to get with vise grip. the two shorter bolts I was able to use socket. I then ordered parts to correct this problem. Downloaded manual for torque specs. reinstalled power head and headed to the river, test ran good but noticed these new issues, I have owned this motor since new and just figured due to age of motor and no plans to sell I would install both electrical components. I can't say if the water spraying under the cowl took out the rectifier or lighting coil as I was getting low voltage warnings on my humminbird and would also have a low battery when I got home that needed charging. Funny thing is I've been a river rat since I was 14 years old and owned a few boats. When I down loaded the manual in the periodic maintenance section is says to periodically re-torque the power head, Well this old dog learned something new and will be checking them periodically lol. Do you think the lighting coil replacement may correct the loading issue or has no relation to it. All carbs have been removed, cleaned and tuned. They were actually almost spotless, no sediment in the bowls. Motor running great no performance issues other than the loading up.

With a digital meter, when taking ohm readings, hold the probes together. Note the resistance seen. Say it is 0.2 ohms. Subtract this value from the resistance seen when testing the resistance of a component.

I thought you said that downloaded the service manual?
Thanks Boscoe99, I looked at the schematic more than once before posting and the answer was looking back at me. even followed it from the lighting coil to the rectifier, can't believe I couldn't see it........dah
I just received my parts today gonna get busy.
