One month ago i baught a Mercury 40hp 2 stroke 4 cylinders. It starts fine and runs good. But after maximum one hour driving it just stops.
Sometimes it starts instant when trying to start it up again, and Sometimes it starts up after waiting for several minutes. I've been waiting up to 15 min before it finaly start again.
Any idea what this can be?
The motor is from around 1995.
I live in Norway so my typing is probably not the best
Hopefully someone can give me som hints her.

First off, check your fuel primer bulb. If it is sucked flat, your tank isn't venting properly.

When it quits check motor for spark, if it has none highly likely stator/rectifier regulator problem

Question on that sir. Wouldn't a problem with the areas mentioned be more of a permanent nature, not just off and back on, barring a bad connection that vibration is hitting and missing? I didn't have a good answer other than non venting fuel tank, but that problem would have taken longer than he stated to correct it's self.

A defective regulator/rectifier can cause stator to overheat and shut down, after a cooling period it will resume operation. I have actually seen them get so hot the encapsulation melted off it. On a 40 amp system they can turn cherry red like a stove element till the coating burns off the winding.
