I have a mercury force 90hp from 1995 that I am trying to test the spark on. I don't have the controls. It has an 8 pin connector. it should be similar to the diagram except my terminal count goes backwards as seen in the pic and terminal diagram. i think my wiring is similar to the wiring diagram but may not be the same. what is the best way to hook the battery and jump the ignition to test spark?
Thanks

Forget about that one it's not remotely the same,

If the plug is not plugged in to the controls you will have to jump the starter to crank the engine & check for spark

Meaning; use jumper-cables(booster-cables) & put power to the starter-terminal, no need for additional hook-up.
Keep in mind; if it start you have no way of shutting it down (without grounding the ignition wires/cutting-off fuel supply)

Without the control harness plugged into the socket; no you don't, but you should have wire hooked up to the solid black/yellow stripe wire to touch the ground/frame to shut it down.
(if this schematic is what you have)
